Box Car Racer was a side-project (it is insisted by Tom DeLongethat it was never a "band" but rather a project) created by Tom DeLongeof Blink-182. While Blink-182took a break in 2002, DeLonge formed Box Car Racerto experiment with and record ideas he felt did not fit in with Blink-182's sound. Tom soon enlisted Travis Barkerstating that the reason why he asked Barker to drum on the album is because he didn't want to pay for a studio drummer. Taking Barker from blink-182 and David Kennedythey recorded their eponymous album Box Car Racerin 2002. On the album Tom did all the bass work, but was their touring bass player.
